The UK government have published a new strategy to “improve the lives of autistic people”. This new strategy has been backed by nearly £75 million, the purpose of which is to speed up the diagnosis and to improve the support and care for autistic people.
However, a total of 50 charities have signed a letter to the education secretary, Nadim Zahawi, and the health secretary, Sajid Javid, expressing concern that some of the plans could damage disabled children’s education and development. The letter does state however, that it agrees with a vast majority of the reforms but that it still falls short of what the Autistic community deserve.
Autistic people face multiple disadvantages throughout their lives, with too many struggling to get support that is tailored to their needs at an early enough stage and facing stigma and misunderstanding, often leaving them lonely or isolated.
